Looking for Pilates Classes online? Hi I’m Kara Alessio, welcome to PilatesByKara! I’ve been a Pilates Instructor for more than 16 years, practising and teaching the Classical Pilates method and DNS (Dynamic Neuromuscular Stability Part 1&2) in both group and clinical setings. In my 16 years of teaching I have worked with every type of body from elite athletes in their pre and post rehabilitation, and mums-to-be, to the everyday person, and one thing is consistent, we can all do with Pilates in our life.
I began my own Pilates journey more than 20 years ago when my physio introduced me to the method. I was having trouble managing a lower back injury while training for Triathlons. With regular practise, I was able to resume my training regime. By this time, I was hooked and was hungry to learn more and so began my instructor training. I hadn’t been long into my instructor training when I learnt I was pregnant with our first child. I was able to complete my training with great personal insight and experience in the practise and teaching Pilates through pregnancy.
Now I have three healthy boys and I continued my Pilates practise throughout each pregnancy right up to their delivery date. Perhaps because of my own experience I have a passion for teaching pre/post-natal Pilates. The benefits physically and mentally for mums and mums to be cannot be underestimated.
What inspires me as a Pilates teacher is witnessing the physical transformation of my clients. Whether, it’s improvement in mobility, flexibility, range of motion, strength or rehabilitation of injury or improving their awareness of correct breathing.
I am professional and known for being particular with technique in my teaching but enjoy the opportunity to employ humour and a sense of fun in my classes. I also like to use visual imagery to cue and assist clients in developing a greater understanding of their bodies through movement. I guarantee you will enjoy each class and the benefit it brings. Designed for all individuals at any stage of their Pilates journey or getting back into Pilates. Just about every benefit Pilates has to offer can be achieved through mat work. Toning, improved flexibility and posture, more efficient functional movement and the mind/body connection. The combination of classic Pilates sequencing and the DNS method will provide you with an exceptionally good workout that will build the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits and a strong core.
You will learn the foundations of the Pilates method and DNS principles at a pace that is equal to your abilities. The focus in this class is to teach clients how to coordinate the activation of trunk stabilisers (diaphragm, deep abdominals, deep back muscles and pelvic floor) and functional breathing (since 90% of all adults don’t breathe properly). Options to progress or modify exercises are given throughout the class. This is an affordable and effective way to stay strong in the comfort of your own home.
Beginners & Suitable for Pre/Post Natal
- Level: A class designed for clients new to Pilates and new or expectant mums (once you have clearance from your Doctor to return to exercise, usually after your 6 week check-up post delivery). For expectant mums in the second trimester, please bring a pillow or bolster to elevate your head.

A class tailored for any new mums (once you have clearance from your doctor, usually at your 6 week check-up post-delivery) or mums-to-be.
I have extensive experience in teaching these classes and ensure they are delivered in a supportive and nurturing way. The focus is on improving the strength in muscles to support your posture, spine and pelvis to enable you to get through your pregnancy with more ease and restore the strength of and coordinated activation of the trunk stabilisers (incudes diaphragm, deep abdominals, deep back muscles and pelvic floor) post-delivery. I like to spend time with my new mums or mums to be on functional diaphragmatic breathing as often during pregnancy (particularly the later trimester) and post-delivery we may have trouble or forget how to breathe functionally. Keeping trunk stabilisers strong can help reduce the risk of abdominal separation during pregnancy and help to repair separation post-delivery. I offer modifications with each exercise and recommend using bolsters or props as required. A personalised program is designed and followed to ensure you are kept safe and comfortable throughout the class and your individual needs are met.
